Jewish community Chabad Lubavitch Moldova
As all borders close, Chabad Moldova & GJRN host the largest local shechita for thousands of guests

Chabad Moldova, in collaboration with the GJRN led by Rabbi Eliezer Avtzon, recently organized a large-scale Shechita in Floreni, Moldova. This event took place amidst the worsening of the war and the blockade of goods at the border between Ukraine and Moldova. The main concern is to provide the local community and the many guests who were traveling to Mezibuz and Uman Kosher meat. It is estimated that approximately 30,000 guests will pass through Moldova on their way to Ukraine to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.

Recognizing the significance of this event, Israeli FM Eli Cohen and the Minister of Jerusalem Affairs and Jewish Heritage paid a special visit to Moldova to discuss arrangements for the guests. During their visit, they highlighted the crucial assistance and support provided by Chabad Moldova to the guests. For several years, Chabad Moldova has been organizing the reception of thousands of visitors, ensuring they have access to kosher food, minyan services, and a clean mikvah.

In their efforts to continuously improve the experience for the guests, Rabbi Shneor Zalman and Chana Tiefenbrunn specially arrived from New York to coordinate and ensure that all the visitors’ needs are met. Meanwhile, the construction of an impressive mikvah is being carried out in phases to ensure uninterrupted service throughout the entire period.

Rabbi Zushe Abelsky, Director of Chabad Moldova, emphasized that their work in restoring Jewish life in Moldova has been ongoing since the fall of communism in 1990. However, it became even more critical when the war broke out between Russia and Ukraine last year. Due to its strategic location, the Chabad community in Moldova has been able to offer shelter, food, and medical assistance to thousands of refugees. The local Shul has become a central hub for both guests and refugees traveling to Ukraine, and Chabad Moldova is dedicated to easing their long and tiring journey.
